#2 Lapis Lazuli Magical Property – Protection, Support and Guidance

lapis lazuli magical properties

We have already told you about how lapis lazuli can offer psychic protection as well as how to use lapis lazuli to benefit from this power in Lapis Lazuli as a Psychic Protector post, but what we have not told you is about other magical properties lapis lazuli has – guidance and support. So, how to use lapis lazuli to attract god luck, get support in all you beginnings and guidance in your current affairs?

Wear lapis lazuli if it is your birthstone daily or gather the whole set of birthstones and alternate them monthly to benefit from full birthstone healing powers effect.

# 1 – Use Lapis Lazuli as Birthstone

Precious gems were first associated with signs of the zodiac and were worshiped for their special gemstone meanings. According to Wikipedia, a birthstone is a gemstone that represents a person’s month of birth.

lapis lazuli magical properties

Historical Remarks (you may skip if not interested):

  • It wasn’t until the first century A.D. that the Romano-Jewish scholar Titus Flavius Josephus connected 12 stones in Aaron’s breastplate (also called the Breast-plate of Judgment), 12 months of the year and 12 signs of the zodiac. This priestly breastplate was a sacred breastplate first worn by the first High Priest of the Israelites – Aaron (older brother of Moses, the same one that parted the Red Sea), according to the Book of Exodus and its 12 stones represented 12 tribes of Israel.
  • Second stone of the second row in this breastplate was called Sapir. Despite appearing to refer to Sapphire, Sapphire as we know it today, was essentially unknown before the era of the Roman Empire. It is more likely that the term Sapir referred to a mineral of similar color to Sapphires, and that this name gradually came to refer to the latter mineral, on account of its color. Scholars think the most likely candidate is lapis lazuli, a stone with a deep, ocean-blue color which was frequently sent as a gift to Akhenaten ( ancient Egyptian pharaoh).
  • Theophrastus (the Greek successor to Aristotle) mentions the stone sapphirus as being “dark” and having the “color of verdigris,” as well as being “speckled as of with gold.” By all accounts, his description fits the lapis-lazuli.
  • As addition, in 21 chapter of The Book of Revelation (a book of the New Testament that occupies a central place in Christian eschatology), John describes seeing the New Jerusalem (heaven), and he goes into detail about the 12 foundation stones, the streets of pure gold and the pearl gates. In Revelations, the blue sky is referred as sapphires, but as we know already they are referring to the heavenly Lapis Lazuli and not to sapphire like we know it today.

So the concept of the birthstones itself has long-lasting history that goes way back to the appearance of Christianity. But modern lists of birthstones that exist today have little to do with either the breastplate or the Foundation Stones of Christianity. Customs, tastes and confusing translations have distanced them from their historical origins.

Ancient traditional birthstones are society-based birthstones. In an effort to standardize birthstones, the National Association of Jewelers adopted a list in 1912. Although some authors call this list “nothing but a piece of unfounded salesmanship”. Why? Because in 1870, Tiffany & Co. published a pamphlet that included a poem that laid out the birthstone for each month, and after that, in 1912 the National Association of Jewelers officially adopted a birthstone list. Guess what it looked like? Yes, like a list of stones from Tiffany & Co. pamphlet and had nothing to do with Aaron’s breastplate.

lapis lazuli magical properties

So, who can choose lapis lazuli as their birthstone?

  • According to Aaron’s breastplate, people born in July have lapis lazuli as their birthstone.
  • According to the list from the Authorized Version of the Bible of 1611 A.D, people born in April have lapis lazuli as their birthstone.
  • According to the list from Conference of National Association of Jewelers – August 1912, people born in December have lapis lazuli as an alternate birthstone.
  • According to the list from The National Association of Goldsmiths of Great Britain – 2013, people born in September have lapis lazuli as an alternate birthstone.

What we would suggest is to either follow the Aaron’s order or Biblical order or follow your intuition, if you feel like lapis lazuli is for you, then choose it.

Do not let jewelers decide for you. Famous gemologist G.F Kunz, author of “The Curious Lore of Precious Stones”, has stated clearly what are their motivations for choosing birthstones:

There is no doubt that the owner of a ring or ornament set with a birthstone is impressed with the idea of possessing something more intimately associated with his or her personality than any other stone, however beautiful or costly. The idea that birthstones possess a certain indefinable, but nonetheless real significance, has long been present and still holds a spell over the minds of all who are gifted with a touch of imagination and romance.

For those who are gathering the whole set of 12 birthstones here is a list of stones initially described in the Book of Exodus as 12 Foundation Stones of New Jerusalem (Heaven):

#2 – Use Lapis lazuli as Natural Color Birthstone

The natural color wheel shows the progression of life and color on the planet earth. In opposition to other astrological signs and other birthstone lists. This wheel shows us the color of our birth time on earth.

The wheel is read in counterclockwise order. Start from the winter solstice at the top and follow the color wheel and the year around to the left. The second inner ring shows the days of the year as the year and the color changes progress through the greens of spring, the yellows of summer, and the reds of autumn.

lapis lazuli magical properties

Blue is the color of the true natural birthstones of those born as the world awaits the vernal equinox and spring (February 19 – March 19). This is a time when new life is about to burst forth, a time of faith and trust. So, according to natural color wheel, lapis lazuli as the bluest of the blues is a birthstone for people under the Zodiac sign of Pisces. (That’s me 🙂 ). And it is a perfect fit.

Like we’ve read in this blog before, Lapis Lazuli is the gem of trust. When we seek to become more sincere, act more responsibly, or become more trustworthy or faithful, lapis give us the focus we require. Lapis lazuli is excellent in ensuring that we are acting out our lives as worthy of the trust of our friends, acquaintances and community.

Lapis Lazuli has been considered a Birthstone since the Breastplate of Aaron. It has been in different lists of birthstones in time, but still remain very popular. And really isn’t it nice to know that you are helping someone by providing an effective healing tool when you give someone a birthstone jewelry gift? The best way to give birthstone as a gift is in form of pendant or ring.

# 3 – Use Lapis Lazuli Talismans

lapis lazuli magical properties

People have believed since ancient times that carrying a stone not only brings them healing but also influences ones fate, brings love, health and wealth. Ancient manuscripts mentioned the use of precious and semi precious stones as amulets and talismans. The belief was that powerful spirits live inside the stones. So, let’s see the importance of this belief for past, present and future generations.

A talisman is capable to emit a magical force to help the owner. Talismans are believed to bring luck and protection. One of the legends surrounding them says that a giant who lived way before the great flood invented the talismans. Using his talismans this giant was able to influence the fortune of people who asked his help.

The Romans also used plenty of talismans. A well-known story about talismans in the Roman Empire is about the Roman senator Norie. He valued his talisman so much that chose to resign his land and wealth, fall in disgrace and expatriation than to give Mark Anthony his talisman, the ring with Opal and Lapis Lazuli he owned.

lapis lazuli magical properties

Another story related to talismans is about a Russian singer Feodor Chaliapin. When his singing partner Ylka Popova lost her voice, only with a great effort Chaliain convinced her to wear his talisman ring with a diamond stone. Feodor told her that it belonged to Peter the Great and that it guaranteed the perfect voice and good fortune. She never lost her voice again. Chaliapin never got his ring back.

A talisman is both focus and a natural amplifier. As a focus it serves to control your feelings to lead you to the right thought. As an amplifier a talisman brings you the ability to join with the power and energy of the Universal Life Force and the Life Force of this planet.

Lapis Lazuli as a talisman is especially important for gaining respect, keeping negative energy away and for helping us to remember to be humble in our dealings with others. What again serves you right if you’re looking for spiritual growth. If you want to develop quick of mind you should also wear Lapis Lazuli.

How to Pick a Talisman?

lapis lazuli magical properties

Choosing the right talisman is very important. People who are violent and short tempered should always avoid adjutant stones (usually red colored). For example, Ruby can provoke such people to act irrationally. On the contrary, when it is carried by a shy, timid persons, it wakes up their will to win. It thrives away melancholy and boosts their vitality. Opal, for example, is a good stone for melancholic people. It gives them hope, helps out of depression. Lapis lazuli as talisman suits everyone, but eve better it fits overly active, short tempered people as it centers and calms them deep in the soul.

Your zodiac sign can be your talisman, but also any jewelry you like. Talismans called to stimulate all the good sides of their owners. Psychologists state that if the person trusts in the talisman, she/he easier reaches established goals and better resists everyday sorrow.

# 4 – Use Lapis Lazuli Amulets

lapis lazuli magical properties

According to Wikipedia, an amulet is an object which most important characteristic is the power assigned to it to protect its owner from danger or harm. Unlike a talisman, Amulets protect its owner against undesirable influences from outside. Amulets smooth external negative impulses which can harm its owner. They are supposed to be worn under the clothes, away from stranger’s sight.

Throughout history, the most popular amulets were the ones in shape of a heart. They were made from Carnelian, green Jasper, Basalt, and also from the magnificent Lapis Lazuli.

lapis lazuli magical properties

The Ancient Egyptians considered the heart a life center. They had great respect for it even after death. The heart was placed in a special vessel and buried it with a mummified corpse. The heart was represented symbolically by a scarab. Egyptians have made the scarab an emblem of the world, paternity and also the human being. The scarabs personified the peoples dream of immortality.

For example, Tutankhamun’s tomb was full of Lapis lazuli scarabs. A lapis scarab was placed over the site of Tutankhamun’s heart to prevent the heart from incriminating him in the underworld’s Hall of Judgment. Large lapis scarabs were also placed under the mummy’s wrapping in place of the heart, which had been removed along with other organs during the embalming process (not done usually). To learn more about the reason of it as well as uses and importance of lapis lazuli in Ancient Egypt check our Egyptian Lapis Lazuli post.

As with Tutankhamun, elaborate pectorals of Lapis Lazuli, carnelian and also gold covered the pharaohs Osorkon’s chest, while rings and bracelets of the same combination also adorned his arms and fingers. A tiny, but endearing group in gold and also lapis fund in his tomb shows Osorkon II as the god of the dead, Osiris, crouching on a lapis lazuli pillar engraved with cartouches bearing his names. With golden statues of Horus and Isis on either side.

lapis lazuli magical properties

A major motivation for Trans African trade from the ninth century right across the Muslim world from West Africa to Badakhshan and beyond was the pilgrimage to Mecca, which was undertaken by thousands of West Africans. Pilgrimage was hazardous and an amulet made of the precious Lapis Lazuli was believed to protect one’s path.

Roman legionaries also carried lapis rings with scarabs because they believed these rings will give them courage and force.

So, what can be an amulet?

Potential amulets include gems, especially engraved gems, statues, coins, drawings, pendants, rings, plants and animals. Words used in the form of a magical spell or incantations to repel evil or bad luck are also considered amulets.

The latest researches confirm that as a stone was “born”, “lives” and “dies”, it means it’s not a dead matter. That it is a living organism capable to radiate and absorb energy and, therefore, interacts with the person.

Good and evil forces surround us constantly. Since ancient times people have used stones like Lapis Lazuli to channel the good forces and repel the evil ones. So, if you feel that you need a protective talisman, choose lapis lazuli. It is always a safe bet and strong protector. Remember, if the stone delivers pleasure and installs belief, it means the stone was yours from the beginning.

# 3 Lapis Lazuli Magical Property – Magical Effects of Blue Color

lapis lazuli magical properties

Lapis lazuli embodies the image of the boundless universe painted by nature. Some people affirm that they can loose themselves in the depth of this magical color, similar to the blue light of the Greek ocean when water and air melt into one another on the horizon, when the polarities of sky and water merge.

For exemple, the russian painter and art theorists Kandinsky expresses the color blue as a sensual experience:

The tendency of blue for depth is so great that it becomes more intense particularly in darker shades and appears, appropriately so, more internal. The deeper the blue, the more it calls a person into infinity and awakens the longing for pureness and ultimately transcendence.

lapis lazuli magical properties

The Greeks considered blue merely vapor and air – nothing material; a color of perspectives, ethereal as the color of the sky, the ocean, the shadow of the moon, the unreal. Moreover, many traditional Greek buildings have the color Greek Blue on them. Greek Blue is more commonly found on doors, roofs, fences.

Angels are messengers, healers and protectors and help us with just about every area in our lives. They can help us restore our faith, trust ourselves as well as our path and even help us open up to unconditional love. They are easily accessible for us, the human race.

Angels are of a different frequency than spirit guides or crossed over loved ones. They have not had physical life experiences and we do need to invite them in to help us with our lives. Angels follow the do-not-violate humans’ free will code unless there is a situation where the person is going down a path which is not for the highest and best good of that individual. They are ready to jump into action to the best of their abilities. They may reveal themselves to us as light, orbs, colors, feathers, or also a being of light with wings.

Lapis Lazuli Fashion Color

lapis lazuli fashion

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (German writer and statesma), the first to systematically study the physiological effects of colour, said in his Theory of Colours (1810):

Blue is a delightful nothing.

[…]

Blue is pleasant, because it doesn’t press us, but only lingers; it gives a feeling of boundlessness and space.

In 1810, Goethe was the first one to point out that our reactions to colors are mainly biologically based. He believed that blue can cause fearful, tender and longing emotions. And that explains why blue is usually considered as color of royalty and why it is so widely used in fashion.

On September 16, 2016, Pantone LLC and X-Rite Company announced the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2017 edition. They are the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industry. And guess which color Pantone was predicted to be one of spring 2017’s hottest color? You guessed it, our magical Lapis Lazuli Blue.

Pantone products have encouraged colorful exploration and expressions of creativity from inspiration to implementation for more than 50 years. During this time they not only chart future color direction, but also study how color influences human thought processes, emotions and also physical reactions.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone said that year:

One of the things that we saw this year, was a renewed sense of imagination in which color was appearing in context that was different from the traditional – as a reminiscent of the hues that surround us in nature.

Indeed, Lapis Lazuli Blue was plucked straight from the gem world and was the deepest, most saturated hue of the whole bunch. Its intense blue shade is also imbued with an inner radiance. That’s why this vibrant color was translated to vivid shades of enamel and boldly colored gemstones for jewelry designers, furniture and also cloth.

Lapis Lazuli Fashion Makeup

Egyptian

When Cleopatra started using Lapis lazuli as an eye shadow, it was already a practice that had been going on for thousands of years. However, Queen Cleopatra was the first person in history who had crushed gemstones added to her pigments and used it as makeup as we know it today. She used gemstones to keep her skin looking vibrant and youthful. She used the Lapis Lazuli as kohl pencil to line her eyes while wearing a magnetite on her forehead.

The Egyptian women were the first to paint their lips. Traditionally, they used a dye made of red ocher and iron oxide. In case of the pigment of lapis lazuli, they applied it as raw eye powder or eye paint mixed with other colors. To learn more of use of lapis by the Egyptian civilization read Egyptian Lapis Lazuli.

Lapis Lazuli eye shadows were a boom in the ancient times as they were used as cosmetics and also as a healing mineral. It also had a spiritual importance since the eye makeup also protected the wearer against dark forces and the evil eye.

Browns, blacks, reds, yellows and greens were already being used, so the newly available blue pigment filled in the missing primary color.

Present time

The inorganic pigments are no more than that: minerals and metals. These pigments are known to be safe, stable and non-toxic as they do not have much heavy metal and do not react much with the skin. Although, they have a reduced palette, so the use is limited to certain tones. Especially for foundations makeup and blush, but not for eye shadows, nail polish and lipsticks.

Precious stones like Lapis Lazuli are now used by the most famous makeup brands in the world. The most popular shade of blue is called Ultramarine Blue (UMB) and it is derived from Lapis Lazuli.

All these minerals and gems are having a boom in the fashion industry now. The use of inorganic pigments has grown exponentially by both bio and non bio brands due to their unavailability to cross the cutaneous barrier.

Lapis Lazuli Body Care

Rituals

The company Rituals specializes in body lotions and also in makeup using 100% precious gems. They have mastered an ancient craft and made it their own with their unique touch.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Egypt… Land of mysteries for a mysterious stone!

How could we not dedicate an entire post to an enigmatic and incredible civilization when they used Lapis Lazuli in almost every aspect of their lives?

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli is a post where we can appreciate how Ancient Egyptians gave this stone an almost godly importance. We will learn about the mystical Egyptian Civilization and we will continue to learn about it’s the most treasured mystical Lapis Lazuli.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Lapis lazuli is among the earliest and most priced ornamental stones worked to produce carvings, beads and inlays as early as the 4th millennium BC. Check our post about Lapis Lazuli Origin to learn more about it.

Opaque stone (aluminium and sodium silicate and sodium sulphide) with a dark-blue color and sometimes white (calcite) or gold (pyrite) flecks. Lapis lazuli was used in Egypt from the Predynastic Period on to make beads, amulets, and scarabs, and as inlay in jewelry, particularly in the Middle and New Kingdoms.

All kinds of famous jewelry have lapis lazuli inlays:

  • Silver armbands of Queen Hetepheres, the mother of Khufu (4th Dynasty),
  • Jewelry from the pyramids of Lahun and Dahshour (Cairo, Egypt),
  • The treasure of Tod found in Amenemhat’s II tomb (all Middle Kingdom),
  • Jewelry of Tutankhamun (18th Dynasty) (of course, it is impossible to talk about Ancient Egypt without talking of the famous Pharaoh Tutankhamun),
  • Jewelry of the kings whose tombs were found at Tanis (21st and 22nd Dynasties) and many more.

Many texts from ancient Egypt mention Lapis lazuli and say that it was obtained in western Asia and in Meroe and Punt. No mines are known in those areas however. Although some people maintain that Lapis lazuli was found in Egypt, it is almost certain that the only source for ancient Egypt was Badakshan in northeastern Afghanistan. The stone then reached Egypt along the trade routes.

Funny fact:

The classical author Pliny the Elder called the stone sapphire.

Egyptian lapis lazuli

The Egyptians appreciated Lapis Lazuli stone due to the associations they had between its dark blue color with the night of the skies and the gold pyrite flecks that reminded them of the stars. In other words, an image of the heavens.

They saw life in the deep blue color of water and the divine in the immense blue of the sky and they continuously used Lapis Lazuli to portray it all. Artists represented the Nile, the most important river of Ancient Egypt in blue. Blue was also the background color of the paintings portraying the royal graves in the Valley of the Kings. Kings used head kerchiefs painted in blue and gold. And even Tutankhamen used jewelry of gold and lapis.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Uses

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Uses as a Pigment: Ultramarine Blue

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Historically, blue is a “new” color, and one that was initially reserved only for royalty. It emerged about 6,000 years ago in Afghanistan with the lapis lazuli stone that was hailed by the Egyptians as precious. They used it with gold to create eyes for the pharaoh’s tombs, and even used powdered lapis lazuli to create blue eye shadow for Cleopatra.

To learn more about the use of powdered lapis lazuli as a pigment, check our Ultramarine Blue post. And we always have for you even more interesting information. Check our post about Amber Color to know more about existing types of amber and colors it may have.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Uses for Amulets

Egyptian lapis lazuli

In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was a favorite stone for amulets and ornaments such as scarabs that were very popular at a time. At Karnak, the relief carvings of Thutmose III (1479-1429 BC) show fragments and barrel-shaped pieces of lapis lazuli being delivered to him as tribute.

According to Ancient Egyptian myth, the sun (Ra) rolls across the sky each day and transforms bodies and souls.

Modeled upon the Scarabaeidae family, dung beetle, which rolls dung into a ball for the purposes of eating and laying eggs that are later transformed into larva, the scarab was seen as an earthly symbol of this heavenly cycle of sun and rebirth.

Further, they were usually carved from Lapis Lazuli, as its deep, celestial blue remains the symbol of royalty and honor, gods and power, spirit and vision. It is a universal symbol of wisdom and truth.

In the dry, barren land of the Egyptians, this deep cobalt blue color was both a physical and spiritual contrast to their arid desert hues.

The gold flecks were like stars in their night-time sky and by meditating on these colors they felt supernatural forces would transform their lives. The garments of priests and royalty were dyed with Lapis to indicate their status as gods themselves.

Blue colored hippopotamuses produced by artisans were popular as symbols for the life-giving river. Nude female figures coated with blue glaze found in Egyptian graves might have represented life and Creation.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Uses for Healing

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Egyptian High Priests used lapis lazuli also for healing purposes. The healers grounded lapis into powder and swallowed to prevent gallstones. Egyptians also used lapis to prevent sleeplessness and melancholy or fever, as well as an ingredient for eyewash. Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Uses in Jewelry

For Queens

Queen Hetepherus (2600-2500 B.C) had lapis into silver casings for bracelets, ankles and necklaces. Queen Iput had a beetle pendant of lapis. Queen Seneity had a lapis of ovoid beads with discs of gold, carnelian and green feldspar. Queen Nefruhad also a tomb at Thebes containing lapis beads and Queen Ashotep (1650-1567 B.C) owned a diadem crown of lapis, gold, carnelian and feldspar.

For Kings

Kings wore pectoral necklaces of lapis and other stones. King Tutankhamen wore a scarab bracelet of lapis symbolizing the Sun God. King Ramses (1292 B.C) required lapis as a tribute.

Elaborate pectorals of Lapis Lazuli, carnelian and also gold covered the pharaohs Osorkon’s chest, while rings and bracelets of the same combination also adorned his arms and fingers. Lapis scarabs were buried in his wrappings, a large one on his heart.

A tiny but endearing group in gold and also lapis shows Osorkon as the god of the dead, Osiris, crouching on a Lapis Lazuli pillar engraved with cartouches bearing his names. With golden statues of Horus and Isis on either side.

The bulk of the treasure is now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. It has hundreds if not thousands of scarabs.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Uses in Religion

Amulets of deities inlaid with lapis lazuli were made of Osiris, Horus, Maat, Tet, Ra, Bastet and Ibis.

Goddess Isis

Egyptian lapis lazuli

The Egyptians utilized lapis lazuli stone in artwork, amulets, jewelry and cosmetics, but their use on the hair and adornments of the heavenly Goddess Isis shows how much their culture cared for the metaphysical powers of lapis.

The Egyptian Goddess Isis was omniscient, all-knowing and all-seeing. They believed that each small piece of lapis lazuli held a small part of her soul, so those who possess this stone had a connection with her knowledge, insight and magical powers.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Uses in Afterlife

Egyptian lapis lazuli

We can recognize the importance Lapis Lazuli stone had for the Egyptians in life as well as in the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that its blue color was reminiscent of the heavens and symbolized creation and rebirth.

One of the most recognized objects made by man with lapis lazuli is the incredible golden death facemask of Pharaoh Tutankhamun (also known as King Tut, 1332-1232 B.C.). Exhibited in the Egyptian museum, it remains a national symbol. The mask was stripped with horizontal pieces of lapis that was also inset into harps, lyres and decorative boxes holding the organs of the mummified person. From this mask it is quite obvious that Egyptian lapidaries valued silver and lapis as well as gold and widely used lapis lazuli as eye shadow and pigment.

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Not only Tut’s mask show us the love of Egyptians for lapis lazuli. Ushabti (funerary figurines placed in tombs among the grave goods and intended to act as servants or minions for the deceased, should they be called upon to do manual labor in the afterlife) with lapis lazuli inlaid in its eyes represented a godly attribute that would help the royal person into their next life. The mummies had ushabti tucked between them. Produced in huge numbers, ushabtis, along with scarabs, are the most numerous of all ancient Egyptian antiquities to survive.

Egyptian lapis lazuli

But what is the most fascinating for us in Egyptian history is the Book of the Dead, an ancient Egyptian funerary text, used from the beginning of the New Kingdom (around 1550 BCE) to around 50 BCE.

Egyptian lapis lazuli

According to Wikipedia:

“Book” is the closest term to describe the loose collection of texts consisting of a number of magic spells intended to assist a dead person’s journey through the Duat, or underworld, and into the afterlife and written by many priests over a period of about 1000 years.

Can you imagine the importance this book held for Egyptians with their beliefs and religious ideas about afterlife? Egyptian pharaohs lived in a way to make sure they died and got their afterlife! But what is even more fascinating is that the most important part of the transition process was created from lapis lazuli.

A heart. A heart, which was regarded as the aspect of being which included intelligence and memory. A heart, without which the most important thing in the life of Egyptian – afterlife, was impossible. It was protected with spells, and in case anything happened to the physical heart, it was common to bury jeweled heart scarabs made of lapis lazuli with a body to provide a replacement. What have been done to Tutankhamen. Read more about it below, in the chapter about Tutankhamen Tomb.

It is written in the 140th chapter of the Book of the Dead that lapis in the shape of an eye set in gold was considered an amulet of great power. Even Pharaoh Ramses listed Lapis Lazuli in his funeral items in the Book of the Dead.

Egyptian lapis lazuli

The blue mineral Lapis Lazuli possessed purportedly life-giving powers. The Book of the Dead describes Horus, the hawk-like son of the God Osiris destroying all evil. After his deed he appears in the heavenly firmament in the form of a hawk and “his torso is made of blue stone”. Egyptian Blue (blue frit) was used in conjunction with lapis lazuli for painting eyes, hair and crowns of the pharaohs’ statues and sarcophagus. Nile, the most important river of ancient Egypt, is rendered in blue color on grave paintings.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli: Treasures

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Hierakonpolis – Young Lady

One of the most exquisite of all Lapis Lazuli objects can be a young lady of about nine centimeters tall. With a head covered with tight curls. It is of an excellent deep blue Lapis Lazuli. The lady balances now on a wooden peg inserted in the shoulders. It has rounded breasts and buttocks, shapely thighs, well-marked knees.

In other words, a perfect work of art. How treasured she would have been, expensive, rare and made of a stone already regarded as sacred.

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Her headless body was discovered by British archaeologists at the site of Hierakonpolis in 1897. She was found under the threshold of a temple (a sacred spot). Her unification was short of miraculous. In 1906, nine years after body was found, a British archaeologist found the head in the earlier diggings. It is said she dates back from around 2900B.C. Now she lives in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Every Egyptian hoped to be reborn after death, but it was a perilous journey to the next world. A scarab would protect against its dangers. The best way to represent him was with the stone that symbolizes the sky or water, our beloved Lapis Lazuli. The most revered scarab replicas were made of Lapis Lazuli.

The Treasure of Tod

Egyptian lapis lazuli

One important finding was the lapis-lazuli of the Egyptian treasure of Tôd dated from Middle Kingdom (20th c. BC)., discovered by French archaeologists in 1936 near Luxor.

According to specialists from Louvre:

Custom required that foundation deposits be buried beneath Egyptian temples at the time of their consecration by the king. The Tod treasure is unique in that it was buried at a later date, by the successor of the founder of the Tod temple, and includes some metals that were unknown in Egypt. It is evidence of exchanges between the sovereigns of the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean at the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC.

Here they found a hoard of raw Lapis Lazuli as well as quantities of lapis beads and lapis seals buried at some point. Deposited in four copper boxes, the treasure includes thousands of blocks of raw lapis lazuli, minute fragments, beads and carvings stylistically dated to various periods. Copper chests were found in the foundation sand beneath the floor of the temple of Sesostris I (1934-1898 BC), inscribed with the name of the king’s son, Ammenemes II (1919-1865 B.C).

Royal annals mention the many offerings made by King Ammenemes II to the gods and in memory of his father King Sesostris I, shortly after his death. The texts reveal that the king buried the chests in the foundation sand of the temple built by Sesostris I as an act of filial devotion.

This discovery raises the question of the use of lapis lazuli in ancient Egypt because there is no source of lapis in this country. As it was discovered later, almost all the contents were of foreign origin, mostly the seals, Babylonian, Palestinian, Syrian and from eastern Iran.

Tutankhamun Tomb Treasures

Egyptian lapis lazuli

One of the most abundant use of the sacred stone both as inlay but also returning to the sacred scarab as truly representing death and resurrection on the Nile was the Tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. It was a small tomb in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile. According to Wikipedia, it was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter.

Carter discovered the richest pharaonic burial site. Sarcophagus and mummy bedecked with gold and precious stones, Lapis lazuli and its imitations (glass and faience), carnelian and turquoise. The tomb was cramped with precious objects. It took Carter ten years to clear it of its treasures.

Egyptian lapis lazuli

A lapis lazuli scarab was placed over the site of Tutankhamen’s heart to prevent the heart from incriminating him in the underworld’s Hall of Judgment. His heart itself was also replaced for jeweled heart scarabs made of lapis lazuli during embalming process. This is not done usually as Ancient Egyptians believe that heart is a place where the soul resides and is crucial to cross to afterlife, so it is always left in a body. But because of the sword injury Tut received during battle that destroyed his heart and lead to his death, his heart was replaced with lapis lazuli scarabs.

The idea was that the heart or its substitute was the seat of thought and would help the defendant during his interrogation by the tribunal of gods in the underworld’s Hall of Judgment.

There were several magnificent pectorals across his chest as well, representative of the Birth of the Sun, set with huge Lapis Lazuli scarabs. In one of these, the wedjat or the Eye of Horus is balanced over a magnificent scarab with wide falcon like spread wings (a typical funerary scarab), standing on a solar boat, all inlaid with or carved of Lapis Lazuli. Also, a couple of bracelets covered with of lapis lazuli scarabs that are guarded by serpents or uraei inlaid with lapis were found in Tutankhamen’s tomb.

Book of Curiosities of the Sciences and Marvels for Eyes

Egyptian lapis lazuli

In the medieval Egyptian manuscript “Book of Curiosities of the Sciences and Marvels for Eyes”, the buildings were painted with Lapis Lazuli, along with vermilion, gold and malachite green. The text itself, first composed in early eleventh century Egypt, is a medieval view of the cosmos. It is a cosmography dated around 1200 BC that is illustrated with maps of the heavens and of the earth. Blue is the color of the Universe, of the movement of the Sun and the Stars in the firmament merging into the Ocean.

Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Jewelry Today

Egyptian lapis lazuli

Nowadays lapis lazuli in Egypt is still considered a sacred stone. The jewelers from today always try to imitate the beautiful creations from the past. You may find necklaces, earrings, bracelets and figures made from lapis lazuli. And it is not a surprise taking into account the fact that Egyptians saw Life in the deep blue color of water and the Divine in the immense blue of the sky. what they successfully represented in lapis lazuli for ages.

Majestic Lapis Lazuli always surrounding the gods and royalty in life and the afterlife… Nothing better than Lapis Lazuli representing this heavenly color.

Lapis lazuli is a much-coveted gemstone among designers today, all thanks to it brilliant blue coloring. And let be honest, if you own a piece of jewelry with lapis lazuli, probably you’ve spent a fair amount of money, getting the stone, so you wouldn’t want to damage it any way. Here are some general recommendations on what you should and should not do with lapis lazuli jewelry.

#1 – Lapis Lazuli Storage

First of all remember that due to lapis lazuli being a soft stone, it should always be protected from rubbing and scratching against harder stones. So, it is of utmost importance that you store it properly. It should be stored in a soft cloth or cloth jewelry bag to prevent it from getting scratched or damaged by faceted gemstones like amethysts, tanzanite or zultanite.

You do not necessarily need separate jewelry box for each of your Lapis Lazuli pieces. You could wrap them individually using soft acid free paper. Placing them in small zip lock bags not only helps them from getting damaged, but also protects it from oxidants.

However, the best option for storage of lapis lazuli is to wrap it in a cloth or velvet and place it inside a jewelry box – designed to accommodate any temperature. Doing so will protect the stones from friction, scratching, and other means of wear and tear.

REMEMBER: Sunlight can damage about any stone used in beaded jewelry, especially Lapis Lazuli. Constant exposure to heat or sunlight can result in fading of its magnificent ultramarine blue.

You have to keep it away from direct sunlight. So it is best to store them in a jewelry box that is opaque, darker in color and built well enough to keep light from going in.

Because Lapis lazuli is a porous rock, make sure that your Lapis Lazuli is kept in a cool dry place. Do not store your jewelry box, which holds your lapis lazuli, in a place where it will get warm. Make sure that you have a lot of silica gel in these jewelry boxes as well. Silica bags will be able to keep your lapis moisture free for a while.

Lapis lazuli was used to make dyes, especially a rich blue hue known as ultramarine. This paint was quite expensive, seeing as it was created using the finest stones. A lot of artists creating pictures of the Madonna used paint created from lapis lazuli. To learn more about it, check our Ultramarine Blue post.

So, ensure that you store each piece in a separate box, preferably the box that it came in. These boxes are designed with the purpose of protecting and cushioning the jewelry they contain

#2 – Lapis Lazuli Wearing

Lapis Lazuli jewelry in form of earring, rings, necklaces, and pendants are the most sought after. They sure do look magnificent. However, you must keep in mind that a Lapis Lazuli stone is more fragile than many other gemstones, so you must never sleep in your jewelry on in order to avoid any unnecessary pressure on the stone. It can chipped or broken if you drop it on to the floor. Therefore, always be seated and wear your jewelry with caution. Always remove your lapis jewelry when exercising or participating in any sport or athletic activity. Due to lapis soft structure, it is susceptible to strong pressure and high temperatures.

REMEMBER: Always follow the golden rule of wearing jewels―’last to wear and first to remove‘. Remember to wear your outfit, complete your makeup routine, and apply your lotions and fragrance before you wear your jewelry. This ensures that the pieces do not come into contact with any chemicals. Also, while you’re wearing the stone, you must not let it come on contact with water to avoid any major wear and tear.

Lapis lazuli was the favored gemstone among the ancient Egyptians, especially the royal classes, who wore it to ward off the evil eye. It was also coveted in Babylonia, Persia, and Rome as well. Besides their obvious use in jewelry, these stones were used for other decorative purposes, such as mosaics and floor tiles.

While you’re wearing the stone, you must avoid letting it come in contact with daily use chemicals like surf and soap. Coming in contact with these chemicals runs the risk of the upper protective layer of Lapis Lazuli getting removed and this exposing the core of the stone.

If your Lapis Lazuli does come in contact with these chemicals – make sure to dry it off as quickly as possible to avoid any permanent damaging effects. So, no hands washing in lapis lazuli rings!

Preferably, reserve your lapis lazuli jewels for special occasions, since they are not built to withstand daily wear and tear. These stones are at a risk of damage with constant exposure to the elements.

#3 – Lapis Lazuli Polishing

A Lapis Lazuli jewelry that has grown matt from having been worn too much can easily be re-polished at any time.

In overall, there are a lot of opinions about polishing lapis lazuli. Some prefer to leave their gems unpolished. Some people say that to polish a lapis lazuli you have to use a jewelry grinder with a silicon carbide belt, using gentle, steady motions to polish the surface to add shine. Some people say that you can use Alumina to polish your stone (aka aluminum oxide or AlOx).

There are suggestions to use chrome oxide for lapis lazuli polishing, but keep in mind that it is quite messy, so the green color of the chromium oxide is likely what you’ll find on your walls & clothes if you use it – that’s a vote in favor of alumina.

What we can say in this regard is to advise you to visit a specialist if you want your lapis lazuli polished and shiny. Polishing should be kept to a minimum, because not only can it be expensive, but it will also make your stone a bit smaller every time it is done. Make sure that it is done sparingly, as it can diminish the strength of your lapis stone.

REMEMBER: Do not expect a hard glossy wet-looking polish on most Lapis Lazuli. The density of the stone varies greatly. Some polishes well, and some polishes spotty with a spongy appearance.

It is not required to apply colorless wax or synthetic resin to the gem after polishing it, but it helps to protect it, as long as these substances are not mixed with any coloring agent.

Mild Soap Lapis Lazuli Cleaning

Lapis Lazuli is not a gem that should be heavily cleaned daily because of its delicate composition. However, it is still necessary to clean them after some time because things like sweat and oils do contaminate our beaded jewelry and could actually damage them. Based on our own experience as a jewelry shop we can propose you an only option that we find more or less suitable for cleaning lapis lazuli – mild soap cleaning.

REMEMBER:

  • Warm, soapy water is the safest way to clean lapis lazuli. It’s best to test a small, inconspicuous area first, because some dye treatments are not stable.
  • You should never put lapis lazuli in a chemical dip or ionic jewelry cleaner and it should always be protected from acidic substances.
  • Avoid hot water at any cost. You can use cold water but the best is room temperature water.
  • Lapis Lazuli cleaning in water should be done quickly because the gem should not stay wet for too long. Prolonged contact with water may dissolve and damage the calcite content.
  • DO NOT use abrasive cloth when washing or wiping dry your Lapis Lazuli because it can scratch the stone. Forget about using scotch brite and tooth-brush because it will ruin your jewelry.
  • Using a soft cloth like lint free or micro fiber optical lens cleaning cloth is recommended. The softer and smoother the cloth, the better.

How to perform mild soap lapis lazuli cleaning?

  1. Fill a shallow bowl with room-temperature or lukewarm water mixed with a very mild soap or very diluted jewelry cleaner. The water used to clean lapis should not be acidic otherwise it will damage it. Do not use hot water.
  2. Preferably start cleaning a small, inconspicuous area because dye treatments are not stable. The dye used in some lapis can come off if it’s rubbed with acetone (nail polish remover) or denatured alcohol, so it’s sometimes sealed with wax or plastic. Wax sealers can deteriorate when they’re exposed to heat or solvents.
  3. If you see that everything is fine with the area of first contact, place the lapis lazuli in the water briefly. And once again, prolonged contact with water may damage the calcite content.
  4. Use a soft smooth cloth such as microfiber (the softer and smoother, the better) to gently rub the lapis lazuli. Do not use an abrasive cloth, which can scratch and ruin the stone.
  5. Dry the lapis lazuli quickly and softly with an additional cloth.

These days different chemicals like ammonia and ultrasonic cleaner are also used for cleaning gemstones, you must keep this fact in mind that these solutions can be good for some gemstones, but not for all especially for opaque gemstones like lapis lazuli.

Lapis Lazuli Power Cleaning

As it is said, all gemstones emit certain type of energy and the associated power of some gemstones is because of this very energy. However, sometimes dirt or other chemical deposits serve as a hurdle in the way of smooth release of this energy and thus it can spoil the associated powers of some gemstone.

Typical ways to clean stones include water, sun, soil and salt, but you know none of these options are appropriate for lapis lazuli. You cannot expose it to the sun for prolonged periods because its color can fade. You cannot put you lapis lazuli jewelry into the water due to its porous nature. You cannot bury it in the ground again due to its porous nature and salt is not even up for discussion, when talking about lapis lazuli. So what to do?

Use imagination!

Soil Lapis Lazuli Cleaning

For many of us city dwelling is our only alternative… How are we to bury our stones or crystals in our cities? In this case, a large terracotta pot, organic potting soil and moss gathered from the forest can be used as an alternative. Place lapis lazuli on top.

Salt Lapis Lazuli Cleaning

Salt was and has been prevalent in helping create minerals. The flow of underground streams, fresh water or springs help carry minerals (raw or liquid state) to a hole, pocket or cavity and over the centuries, this raw, liquid chemistry creates or turns into crystal formations. And again, depending on the chemical compound, different types of minerals can be created.

However, we do not condone the use of a salted solution or getting salt any where near my minerals or crystals. As alternative, you could place your lapis lazuli jewelry in a small glass bowl and place that bowl in a larger one which is full of salt. The energy cleansing process will still work, but the stone won’t be harmed by the salt. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Same thing can work with water. Just try to feel your stone and its needs.

Moonlight Lapis Lazuli Cleaning

The harmful rays of the sun, not only weaken the minerals structure (much like the salt), it even can open small cracks and encourage pitting on the surface of the stone. Fading of the crystal will occur if left in direct sunlight for any length of time. But nothing similar comes from a moonlight! Place your lapis lazuli somewhere under direct moonlight, just don’t forget to take it away when the sun comes up.
