Known as the Southern Star, this diamond is the largest in the world with 530.20 carats in weight. It was delivered to King Edward VII, who send it to carve in 1906 and obtained 150 pieces. The pieces of this diamond were categorized according to their size and were named as Cullinan I, Cullinan II etc.
Lesedi La Rona:
This diamond was found in Africa. It is estimated that after Cullinan is the largest in the world with 1,109 carats. It was taken to auction but no one bought it, the auction was made in June 2016 and stopped at 61 million dollars.
At first sight, its beauty is not the same as of the other diamonds, but it has simplicity and freshness, making it more impressive and worth admiring.
Centenary:
It is a diamond of 273.85 carats and it is positioned as the third largest diamond in the world. It was discovered in 1986 and a whole year was needed to prepare it, since it was feared that the classic tools would damage it. Gabi Tolkowsk was commissioned together with a small team to model it, needing almost three years to work it. It was presented to the public in the Tower of London in 1991.
Today its owner and value are unknown, although there are some speculations. It’s a shame it is not exposed, because this beauty should be available to admire it.
Orlov:
It was found in India and it weighs 189.62 carats. Grigori Grogorievich Orlov bought it in 1774 and gave it to Catherine the Great. The idea was to convince her to come back with him, although she was delighted, this time love didn’t triumph. Catherine ordered to mounted it on the imperial scepter of the Romanovs.
I’m sure Catherine the Great felt even more powerful with this beauty in her royal scepter.
Taylor Burton:
This diamond was a gift from Richard Burton to his wife Elizabeth Taylor. The famous actor bought it in 1969 for $1.100.000. Burton said he woulnd’t paid more than $1.000.000, but at the end he did, because he considered it as the perfect symbol of love for Elizabeth Taylor. When she divorced for the second time with Burton she decided to sell it and destined it to construct a school in Botswana.
It was sold it to a family who had supported the Nazi movement during the war, then she felt bad as jew, so she bought it back. She decided to conver it into a necklace and we think this was a great decision.
Hope diamond:
It is said that this diamond adorned the third eye of a goddess in India and a priest stole it. Then the diamond arrived in Europe and a French merchant sold it to King Louis XIV. The merchant was tragically killed. The diamond belonged to royalty until it was stolen in the French Revolution (1792); Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette are considered the most celebrated victims of the Hope diamond.
Later, the diamond was bought by an English banker called Hope and that’s why the diamond has that name. The misfortunes continued for the later owners. It’s been said that this diamond concluded its curse when the jeweler Henry Winston donated it to the Smithsonian Institution.
Pink star:
This 59.6 carat diamond is currently ranked as the most expensive diamond sold at an auction. It was sold for $ 71.2 million in Hong Kong on April 3, 2017. The buyers are part of the hotel, property, casinos, transport, telecommunications and jewelry stores business.
Shah diamond:
This diamond of 88.7 carats is known for its curious coffin shape. This diamond has three inscriptions telling its story. One of its possessors was the Sha of Persia and his name was carved on the stone. At the beginning of the XIX century, it belonged to the Tsar Nicolas of Russia.
Cora sun-drop:
For its purity, color and size, this precious stone is unique in the world. It is praised for its rare color and it was discovered in South Africa.
This 110.3-carat diamond was sold in 2011 for $12.4 million of dollars. It was the star of the event organized by Sotheby’s.
Hortensia:
This stone of 20 carats is now part of the collection of the Louvre Museum in Paris.
It’s a diamond of Indian origin and it was bought by King Louis XIV of France in the early 1700’s and since then it has been part of the French Crown. Its name comes from Hortense de Beauharnais, queen of Holland and mother of Napoleon Bonaparte.
