Stripy agates arise due to the dynamic deposition of differently colored chalcedony. If the amygdala is not completely made with chalcedony, inside it remains a void, that favors the free growth of rhinestone crystal, amethyst or the smokestone. Such cavities occur crystals of calcite, hematite, siderite or zeolites. Agate’s level of transparency varies from almost transparent to opaque. The palette of colors is very rich – color stripes can have different colors and shades : black, white, pink, red, gray and blue. The most common is a blue-gray color palette.
Unremarkable bluish-gray South American agates usually are colored to enhance their attractiveness for making the agate jewelry.
